I attempt to elucidate a particularly baffling remark made by Richard Goldschmidt. The discussion allows me to say something about Goldschmidt’s views on selection in The Material Basis of Evolution, and develop some ideas about scientific modeling.

Note: This paper was folded into a larger project. If you are interested in the detailed discussion of the metaphor, please ask me for the oringal (shorter) version.
